Functions, Features, and Working Principle of Submersible Slurry Pump in Mud System

Function of Submersible Slurry Pump in Mud System

In oil & gas drilling mud systems, the submersible slurry pump is primarily used to feed the decanter centrifuge. The centrifuge can be fed by either a submersible slurry pump or a screw pump. Compared with screw pumps, slurry pumps offer a more durable, compact, and space-saving solution, making them ideal for continuous slurry transfer.

Additionally, slurry pumps are widely used in Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and municipal engineering for slurry or wastewater treatment. In these systems, the pump is used to supply shale shakers or mud cleaners. The submersible slurry pump can be directly installed on existing mud pits or tanks, efficiently delivering untreated slurry to processing equipment.

Model Description and Key Features

A. Model Example:

 AP100YZ100-30

 AP: Company abbreviation

 First 100: Discharge diameter (mm)

 Second 100: Flow rate (m³/h)

 30: Head (m)

Note: All parameters above represent maximum design values.

B. Key Features

1. Compact vertical structure, single-stage, single-suction cantilever design

2. Semi-open impeller suitable for solids handling

3. Submerged pump shaft with sufficient rigidity

4. No bearing or mechanical seal between impeller and pump casing

5. Capable of handling high-concentration slurry with large solid particles

6. Maintenance-free design, reducing operating costs 7. Submerged depth can be flexibly extended using extension pipes

Structure and Working Principle

The submersible slurry pump mainly consists of the submerged pump head and a vertical motor, connected via a flexible coupling. For installations exceeding 2 meters of submergence, extension pipes can be added to meet operational requirements.

Main components include: motor, pump casing, rear cover, impeller, pump shaft, connecting pipe, sealing components, bearings, and related accessories.

Working Principle:

1. When the motor starts, the impeller rotates to generate centrifugal force, drawing slurry in and pushing it into the discharge pipe.

2. Slurry is transported through pipelines to the target equipment.

3. The suction inlet is equipped with an agitator blade to prevent blockage by large particles, ensuring smooth flow and extending service life.

Usage Notes

1. Submersible slurry pumps are a type of slurry pump; horizontal slurry pumps are also available.

2. Proper design, model selection, and calculation are key to ensuring performance and longevity.

3. Pay attention to start-up/shutdown procedures and regularly check the lubrication cups and bearing temperature.

4.Periodically check wear clearance between the impeller, pump casing, and pump cover.

Conclusion

The submersible slurry pump is an indispensable device in mud systems, providing reliable and efficient slurry transfer. Its compact structure, strong solids-handling capability, and flexible installation make it widely used in oil & gas drilling, HDD, and municipal engineering projects.
