The Application of Mud Gas Separator in Solids Control System


The gas-handling equipment plays an important role in the solid control system.Generally speaking, The vacuum degasser removes small bubbles, while the mud gas separator (MGS, also known as Poor Boy Degasser or Liquid-Gas Separator) is used to handle big bubbles.

Big bubbles have strong expansion in the wellbore. If do not handle in time, they may cause a well kick with a serious threat to drilling safety. Therefore the mud gas separator is used as a safety device during drilling operations.

It is usually used together with the flare ignition.The flare ignition can deal with the harmful gas which is separated from the mud, thereby it can reduce both environmental and safety risks.

Installation site of the mud gas separator

The mud gas separator is generally installed on flat ground beside the mud tank, fixed with bolts. The mud inlet is connected to the choke manifold and controlled by a valve to ensure smooth and efficient gas–liquid separation.

According to the installation form,it can be classified into the horizontal and vertical mud gas separator.

Note: If the base is equipped with a hole, it indicates a liftable mud gas separator.

Application Notes of the mud gas separator

1.It should be used with an electronic ignition system to dispose of the harmful gas.

2. The vent line should be at least 60 m.  Some clients even request 100m 3. The mud outlet is generally a U-shaped pipe, with a length of no less than 3.6 m.

4. The vessel is made of Q345R steel, which is suitable for handling H₂S environments.

5. The standard color is red (safety warning). Optional colors: green, blue, yellow, black.
